For the past three years I have been living in Raleigh, North
Carolina though I spent most of my life in Canada, both in Vancouver and Toronto. After graduating from
the University of British Columbia in Literature, I moved to Toronto to complete a painting degree at the Ontario College
of Art and Design in 2003.
I use the natural perspectives inherent in wood
grain as backdrops for my subjects. Carefully selected wood grain designs can be highlighted with sheer colored oil paint
to appear as water, desert terrain, sky or even mountain ranges. Depending on scale and placement of objects upon the wood
they can appear in close foreground, in distant background or in sky.
Much of my art is environmental
in nature; my subjects tend to be mostly animals and the difficulties they can have co-existing with humanity.
Recently I have diverged in subject matter and I am currently working on a Koi fish series, and a series of purely
non-objective color studies…but I will always revert back to the animals.
